Vitamin D deficiency in young children causes rickets which is characterised by muscles weakness, pain, fractures and delayed motor development. This makes option A incorrect. Scurvy, caused by vitamin C deficiency, is characterized by scaly skin, muscle degeneration and gum bleeding. Option B is incorrect. Thyroxine and triiodothyronine are thyroid hormones which target all tissues and stimulate metabolic rate, growth and development. Thyroxine has four iodine atoms while triiodothyronine has three iodine atoms. The dietary iodine serves as source and thus iodine deficient diet renders the gland unable to synthesize the hormones. Under these conditions, constant stimulation of thyroid gland by anterior pituitary to secrete hormones leads to enlargement of thyroid gland; the simple goiter. Appropriate dietary iodine intake prevents formation of goiter which makes option C correct. Overproduction of GH in adults causes acromegaly, characterized by enlargement of feet, hands and face (specially the chin, nose and eyebrows ridges) as long bones do not respond to the hormone in them. This makes option D incorrect as GH does not have iodine as its constituent. Correct answer is C.
