Question

Assertion :In Rutherford's alpha scattering experiment, only one among the 20000 alpha particles diverted.
Reason: Most of the space in the atom is vacant.
  1. Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion.
  2. Both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not the correct explanation for Assertion.
  3. Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect.
  4. Assertion is incorrect but Reason is correct.

A
Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect.
B
Both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not the correct explanation for Assertion.
C
Assertion is incorrect but Reason is correct.
D
Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion.
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Most of the space in the atom is empty and only 1 in 20,000 of alpha particles are deflected in Rutherford's experiment.
Very small no. of alpha particles are deflected by the positively charged nucleus as the size of the nucleus is very small.

Hence, option (B) is the correct answer.
