Question

In the circuit shown in the figure, there are two parallel plate capacitors each of capacitance C. The switch S1 is pressed first to fully charge the capacitor C1 and then released. The switch S2 is then pressed to charge the capacitor C2. After some time, S2 is released and then S3 is pressed. After some time :

  1. the charge on the upper plate of C1 is 2CV0
  2. the charge on the upper plate of C1 is CV0
  3. the charge on the upper plate of C2 is 0
  4. the charge on the upper plate of C2 is CV0

A
the charge on the upper plate of C2 is 0
B
the charge on the upper plate of C1 is 2CV0
C
the charge on the upper plate of C1 is CV0
D
the charge on the upper plate of C2 is CV0
Solution

When S1 is pressed, the capacitor C1 will start to charge and its upper plate get charge +2CV0 and lower plate 2CV0.
When S1 is opened and S2 pressed , the total charge of system will distribute equally into C1 and C2 because their capacitance is same. Thus, upper plate of each capacitor will get charge +CV0 and lower plate CV0

Assertion: Charges are given to plates of two plane parallel plate capacitors C1 and C2 (such that C2=2C1)as shown in figure. Then the key K is pressed to complete the circuit. Finally the net charge on upper plate and net charge the circuit. Finally the net charge on upper plate and net charge on lower plate of capacitor C is positive.
Reason : In a parallel plate capacitor both plates always carry equal and opposite charge.
