Question

In the circuit shown in the figure , there are two parallel plate capacitors each of the capacitance C The switch S1 is pressed first to fully charge the capacitor C1 and then released. The switch S2 is then pressed to charge the capacitor C12. After some time, S2 is released and then S3 is pressed. After some time,

  1. the charge on the upper plate of C1 is 2CVo
  2. The charges on the upper plate of C1 is CVo
  3. The charge on the upper plate of C2 is 0
  4. The charge on the upper plate ofC2 is CVo

A
The charge on the upper plate of C2 is 0
B
The charge on the upper plate ofC2 is CVo
C
the charge on the upper plate of C1 is 2CVo
D
The charges on the upper plate of C1 is CVo
Solution
Verified by Toppr

C1=C2=C
When S1 is closed.
Charge on C1=2VC
When S1 is released and S2 is closed.
Charge on C1 and C2=VC
When S2 is released and C3 is closed.
Charge on C2=CV
hence answer B is right.

Assertion: Charges are given to plates of two plane parallel plate capacitors C1 and C2 (such that C2=2C1)as shown in figure. Then the key K is pressed to complete the circuit. Finally the net charge on upper plate and net charge the circuit. Finally the net charge on upper plate and net charge on lower plate of capacitor C is positive.
Reason : In a parallel plate capacitor both plates always carry equal and opposite charge.
