Question

Justify the statement:
Sound is carried by longitudinal waves.

Solution
Verified by Toppr

A longitudinal wave is that in which the vibrations are parallel to the direction of propagation of the wave. When a disturbance is produced in a medium, medium particles are expanded and compressed alternatively, resulting in the formation of a sound wave, these expansions and compressions happen in the direction of wave propagation i.e. vibrations are in wave direction, therefore sound is carried by longitudinal waves.
