An area of animal and plant distribution which has similar or shared characteristics throughout is known as a Biogeographical region. In India, 10 such regions are identified. The areas are Trans-Himalayan Region, Himalayan Zone, Indian Desert Zone, Semi-Arid Region, Western Ghats, Deccan Plateau, Gangetic Plain, North East Region, Coastal Region and Andaman and Nicobar islands. Great biodiversity is observed in such areas. Ladakh is present in the biogeographical region called trans-Himalayas.
