Question

"Lithium is the only alkali metal that form superoxides when heated in excess of air."
Answer whether the above statement is true or false.
If true enter 1, else enter 0.

Solution
Verified by Toppr

Lithium is the only alkali metal that form normal oxides having general formula M2O, when heated in excess of air while potassium, rubidium and caesium form superoxides having general formula MO2, when heated in excess of air.
4Li+O22Li2O ( Lithium oxide)

Due to small size, Li+ has a strong positive field around it which attracts the negative charge so strongly that it does not permit the oxide anion to combine with another oxygen to form peroxide ion.
