Previously, biologists thought the lobe finned fishes were extinct by the end of the Paleozoic era, but Latimeria was the first lobed finned fish caught off the coast of South Africa. These fishes, known as coelacanths, measure nearly 2m in length. They are nocturnal predators on other fishes.
