Question

Loaded test-tube placed in pure milk sinks to a certain mark (M). Now some water is mixed with the milk. Will the test tube sink more or less?
  1. Float More
  2. Float less
  3. Sink less
  4. Sink More

A
Sink More
B
Float More
C
Sink less
D
Float less
Solution
Verified by Toppr

According to Archimedes' principle, Buoyancy force is given FB=Vρg
where, V= volume of immersed object,
ρ = density of fluid and
g = acceleration due to gravity
As density of milk is higher than the density of water. When some water is mixed with milk, then mixture will have lesser density than pure milk. Hence it will exert less amount of buoyant force. Consequently test tube will sink more.

A test tube of thin walls has some lead shots in it at its bottom and the system floats vertically in water, sinking by a length l0=10cm. A liquid of density less than that of water, is poured into the tube till the levels inside and outside the tube are even. If the tube now sinks to a length l=40cm, the specific gravity of the liquid is (70+x)100. Find x.
