Question

Metals are usually hard. Hence metals are strong and can with stand heavy loads over them. Due to this property they are difficult to cut and can be used in the construction of heavy machines, buildings etc. On the other hand, non-metals are usually brittle. On hammering them they break into small pieces converting themselves into the fine powder.

In the following elements identify the element that is relatively brittle.
  1. Sulphur
  2. Diamond
  3. Iron
  4. Magnesium

A
Diamond
B
Sulphur
C
Iron
D
Magnesium
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Answer: sulphur and diamond
Both are non-metal.

Sulfur is brittle due to a particular crystalline structure which has limited slip planes

Diamond is made up of carbon, which is held together by an extremely strong covalent bond. Atoms in the diamond are held together by extremely strong covalent bonds, making them extremely hard. Because of this, diamond has no way of absorbing energy making it brittle.

Rest of element are metal which does not possess brittle properties.
