Question

Mirrors on the outside of the passenger side of the cars often contain a message that says something like. "Objects are closer than they appear." In the other words, the images seen in the mirror, although looking like the objects in other respects, appear to be further away than they actually are, because the images are the smaller than the objects.
What kind of mirror is being used in this case?
  1. convex mirror
  2. The mirror could be concave or convex.
  3. concave mirror
  4. The mirror could be flat or concave.
  5. plane mirror

A
convex mirror
B
The mirror could be concave or convex.
C
plane mirror
D
concave mirror
E
The mirror could be flat or concave.
Solution

From given passenger statements image distance is grater then object distance from mirror ie v>u. and also size of image is smaller then object.
Now,
In plane mirror; Image distance should be equal to object distance and magnification M=1
For curve mirror,
When v>u its mean that object should be between pole and optical center. in such case concave mirror always formed Magnified and inverted image. whereas Concave mirror formed diminished and erect image.
Hence Given mirror will be Convex mirror.
So option B.
