Question

Name the ion responsible for unmasking of active sites for myosin for cross-bridge activity during muscle contraction.
  1. Sodium
  2. Calcium
  3. Magnesium
  4. Potassium

A
Potassium
B
Magnesium
C
Sodium
D
Calcium
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Tropomyosin threads are present around an actin filament and troponin is there at intervals along the tropomyosin. The Troponin makes the Tropomyosin wrap around the actin filament in such a way so that it blocks the myosin binding with actin.
But after the binding of calcium ions (coming from the sarcoplasmic reticulum), troponin changes its configuration. Because of this tropomyosin unblocks actin-myosin binding site on actin protein.
Therefore, the correct answer is option C.

During muscle contraction, the correct sequence of events is:

(A) Binding of myosin head to exposed active site of actin forming the cross-bridge by utilising the energy from hydrolysis of ATP

(B) Binding of Ca++ with troponin of actin filaments and thereby removing the masking of active sites for myosin

(C) Releasing the ADP and Pi from myosin so it can go back to its relaxed state

(D) Release of acetylcholine at neuromuscular junction which generates action potential in the sarcolemma
