The National Education Policy was formulated by the Government of India to promote education. The policy covers elementary education to colleges in both rural and urban India. The policy was put into effect for the first time by the government of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1968 and second time by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1986. Education boards like CBSE are based on this policy.
