Biosphere reserves are multipurpose protected areas which are meant for preserving genetic diversity in ecosystems by protecting wildlife, traditional lifestyle of tribals and domesticated plants and animals. Nilgiri biosphere reserve in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu was the first to be established in the year 1986. Biosphere reserves are based on the new philosophy of preserving the relationship between humans (tribals) and forests.
