Question

Assertion :Only one out of every 12000 alpha particles rebound during Rutherford's experiment. Reason: Most of the space in the atom is empty.
  1. Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion.
  2. Both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not the correct explanation for Assertion.
  3. Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect.
  4. Both Assertion and Reason are incorrect.

A
Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion.
B
Both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not the correct explanation for Assertion.
C
Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect.
D
Both Assertion and Reason are incorrect.
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Since most of the alpha-particle went straight through the metal foil undeflected, it means that there must be a very large empty space within the atom.

Since few of the alpha-particles were deflected from their original path. it was concluded that the whole of the +ve charge is concentrated and the space occupied by this positive charge is very small in the atom.
