During olden days kings enjoyed hunting and treated hunting as royal sport. It is said that Maharaja of Surguja alone killed 1,157 tigers and 2,000 leopards in his lifetime.

Apart from this, British thought that wild animals should live only in forests and uncivilized societies. They thought to make India civilised by killing such wild animals. They also thought presence of wild animals would be a harm to agriculture. This is the reason why over 80,000 tigers, 150,000 leopards and 200,000 wolves were killed for reward in the period of 1875 to 1925.
