Question

P(4,-5) and Q(5,8) are the endpoints of a line segment PQ. The ratio in which PQ is divided by the y-axis is
  1. 3:2
  2. 4:5 externally
  3. 4:5 Internally
  4. 5:8 externally

A
4:5 externally
B
4:5 Internally
C
3:2
D
5:8 externally
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Let PQ intersects the y-axis at A Then the x-coordinate of A is 0
Let PA :AQ be m : 1 Then by Section Formula,

x-coordinate of P=(m)(5)+(1)(4)m+1
or 5m +4 = 0 or m=45
Since m is negative the division is external, the ratio being 4 :5
