Petroleum mainly contains a mixture of alkanes. Chemically, it is a mixture of various types of hydrocarbons along-with some oxygen, sulphur, and nitrogen containing compounds. On an average, crude petroleum contains 80-85% carbon, 10-14% hydrogen and a small amount of sulphur, nitrogen and oxygen.
