Question

Soil erosion is common in areas devoid of vegetation cover. Why?

Solution
Verified by Toppr

Soil erosion is the loosening and displacement of topsoil particles from the land. Topsoil has most of the nutrients necessary for a plant’s growth. With depth, the fertility of the soil decreases. Thus, erosion results in the reduction of fertility of the soil by washing away the fertile top layer.
Humans and their activities are mainly responsible for soil erosion to a great extent. With the increasing population, the demand for land also increases. Forest and our other natural vegetation are deteriorating for cultivation, for human settlement, for food, for grazing animals, for other commercial activities, etc. Removal of forest cover which functions as a binder of the top layer of the soil with increasing land demand has resulted in enhancing the extent of soil erosion. Such improper use of land causes to soil erosion.
