Question

Sound travels faster in
  1. Gases at absolute zero temperature
  2. Gases at 0o C
  3. Hotter gases
  4. Cooler gases

A
Hotter gases
B
Cooler gases
C
Gases at absolute zero temperature
D
Gases at 0o C
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Speed of sound waves depends on the temperature, elasticity and density of the medium.
The sound waves travels slower in denser medium since it takes more energy to move the molecules but fast in elastic medium. Since cold air is denser than hot air, the speed of sound is more in hot air and hence sound travels faster in hotter gases.
