Question

State whether True or False:
High tides are formed on new moon and full moon night.

  1. True
  2. False

A
True
B
False
Solution
Verified by Toppr

True
Tides are caused as a result of the gravitational force exerted by the Moon and the Sun on Earth. The Moon being closer to Earth will have a stronger pull on Earth. Hence, the part of the Earth facing the Moon will experience a pull resulting in a high tide. During full moon and new moon, the Earth, Moon and Sun are in a line and a combined effect of the pull exerted by both Moon and Sun causes the highest tides known as spring tides. On other days, the Sun and Moon are not aligned in a straight line and hence the effect is not equally strong as compared to spring tides.
