Question

Statement I: Increasing the pressure on a confined sample of a gas will decrease its volume.
Statement II: Gas molecules move more slowly as their kinetic energy decreases.
  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are correct and Statement II is the correct explanation of Statement I.
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are correct, but Statement II is not the correct explanation of Statement I.
  3. Statement I is correct, but Statement II is incorrect.
  4. Statement I is incorrect, but Statement II is correct.

A
Statement I is correct, but Statement II is incorrect.
B
Statement I is incorrect, but Statement II is correct.
C
Both Statement I and Statement II are correct and Statement II is the correct explanation of Statement I.
D
Both Statement I and Statement II are correct, but Statement II is not the correct explanation of Statement I.
Solution

Option B is the correct answer.
Pressure and volume are inversely related. When the pressure is increased on a confined sample of gas, its volume will definitely decrease.
Kinetic energy of gas molecules depends on the velocity of the molecules. Because kinetic energy can be expressed as 12 mv2 , where 'v' is the velocity of the gas molecules. As the gas molecules move slowly, velocity of the molecules decreases and the kinetic energy of the gas also decreases.
