HCl is a strong acid and protonates the oxygen atom of alcohol. R−OH+HCl⇌R−OH+2+Cl− Water is a better leaving group than chloride ion. Hence alkyl chloride is formed along with a molecule of water. R−OH+2+Cl−→R−Cl+H2O
