Question

The circuit given below is for the operation of an industrial fan. The resistance of the fan is 3ohm. The regulator provided with the fan is a fixed resistor and a variable resistor in parallel. Under what value of the variable resistance given, power transferred to the fans will be maximum? The power source of the fan is a dc source with internal resistance of 6ohm

  2. 0
  3. 6Ω

A
3 Ω
B
0
C
D
6Ω

The power transferred to fan is given as P=V2/R, where R is the total resistance of the circuit. As power is inversely proportional to total resistance. So for maximum power, the total resistance should be minimum. Total resistance here is R=6r6+r+3. r is the variable resistance.
R is minimum when r=0.

A battery and a variable resistor are in series with a small fan. A switch is closed, and the fan runs. When the variable resistor is moved slightly to the left, the fan slows down a little. When the variable resistor is moved slightly to the right, the fan speeds up a little. If the variable resistor in the circuit is set all the way to the right, what happens in the circuit?
I. The fan runs faster.
II. The voltage decreases.
III. The current increases.

A fan operates at 200V (dc) consuming 1000W when running at full speed. Its internal wiring has resistance 1Ω. When the fan runs at full speed, its speed becomes constant. This is because the torque due to magnetic field inside the fan is balanced by the torque due to air resistance on the blades of the fan and the torque due to friction between the fixed part and the shaft of the fan. The electric power going into the fan is spent (i) in the internal resistance as heat, call it P1, (ii) in doing work against internal friction and air resistance producing heat, sound, etc., call it P2. When the coil of fan rotates, an emf is also induced in the coil. This opposes the external emf is also induced in the coil. This opposes the external emf applied to send the current to the fan. This emf is called back emf, call it e. Answer the following questions when the fan is running at full speed. The current flowing into the fan and the value of back emf e is
