Question

The pH of 0.1 M solution of cyanic acid (HCNO) is 2.34. Calculate the ionization constant of the acid and its degree of ionization in the solution.

Solution
Verified by Toppr

PH=log[H+]

Hence, [H+]=10pH

[H+]=102.34=4.57×103M=[CNO]

Ka=[H+][CNO][HCNO]=(4.57×103)(4.57×103)0.1=2.09×104

The degree of dissociation = Kac=2.09×1040.1=4.57×102
