Question

The gravitational field is a conservative field. The work done in this field by moving an object from one point to another
  1. depends on the end-points only.
  2. depends on the path along which the object is moved.
  3. depends on the end-points as well as the path between the points.
  4. is not zero when the object is brought back to its initial position.

A
is not zero when the object is brought back to its initial position.
B
depends on the path along which the object is moved.
C
depends on the end-points as well as the path between the points.
D
depends on the end-points only.
Solution
Verified by Toppr

A conservative force is a type of force wherein there is no net work done during its motion in any closed loop.
When we throw a ball up there is negative work done as it moves against the force of gravity and during the fall the gravity is in the positive direction. The resultant work done is zero and the force of gravity is path independent.
Thus, gravitational field is a conservative field and work done depends on the end points only.

Assertion: For a charged particle moving from point P to point Q, the net work done by an electrostatic field on the particle is independent of the path connecting point P to point Q.
Reason : The net work done by a conservative force on an object moving along a closed loop is zero.

Q3
Assertion :The gravitational field is a vector field that describes the gravitational force which would be applied on an object in any given point in space, per unit mass. It is actually equal to the gravitational acceleration at that point. Reason: Gravitational fields are also conservative; that is, the work done by gravity from one position to another is path-independent. This has the consequence that there exists a gravitational potential field.
