Question

The initial and final stored energy in the capacitor, Ui and Uf?

Solution
Verified by Toppr

The initial parallel plate capacitance is Ci=Aϵ0d

and the charge is Qi=CiVi=Aϵ0Vd

The final parallel plate capacitance is Cf=Aϵ02d
and charge is Qf=CfVf=Aϵ0Vf2d

As the battery is disconnected so the charge will remain constant so,
Qi=Qf

or Aϵ0Vd=Aϵ0Vf2d

or, Vf=2V

Thus, initial energy stored, Ui=12CiV2i=Aϵ0V22d and final energy stored, Uf=12CfV2f=Aϵ0(2V)24d=Aϵ0dV2

In the P-Vdiagram show, moles of a gas are taken through a process from state i to f, at constant pressure. Part of the heat must have gone into doing the work PΔV, and the rest in increasing the internal energy. If the molar specific heat at constant volume for the gas is CV, and the initial total internal energy is Ui, what is the final internal energy Uf?

Figure (31-E26) shows two identical parallel plate capacitors connected to a battery through a switch S. Initially, the switch is closed so that the capacitors are completely charged. The switch is now opened and the free space between the plates of the capacitors is filled with a dielectric of dielectric constant 3. Find the ratio of the initial total energy stored in the capacitors to the final total energy stored.
