Question

The major product formed in the dehydration of 1butanol by heating with concentrated H2SO4 is _______.
  1. 1, 3 butadiene
  2. trans- 2 - butene
  3. cis- 2- butene
  4. 1-butene

A
1-butene
B
cis- 2- butene
C
trans- 2 - butene
D
1, 3 butadiene
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Primary alcohols undergo bimolecular elimination (E2 mechanism).

Oxygen donates two electrons to a proton from sulfuric acid H2SO4, forming an alkyloxonium ion. Then the nucleophile HSO4 back-side attacks one adjacent hydrogen and the alkyloxonium ion leaves in a concerted process, making a double bond. There is no rearrangement in bimolecular reactions.

The product is 1Butene
