Question

The mean of five numbers is 30. If one number is excluded, their mean becomes 28. The excluded number is
(a) 28
(b) 30
(c) 35
(d) 38

Solution

(d) 38
Mean of 5 numbers = 30
Sum of 5 numbers = 30×5 = 150
By excluding one number, the mean becomes 28.
Now,
Sum of 4 numbers = 28×4 = 112
Excluded number = (150-112) = 38
