Question

The number of possible straight lines, passing through (2,3) and forming a triangle with coordinate axes whose area is 12 sq. units, is
  1. one
  2. two
  3. three
  4. four

A
three
B
four
C
two
D
one
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Draw a line passing through P(2,3)
Let it cut at coordinate axis A(x,0) and B(0,y)
The area of triangle =12
|xy|2=12
So x' has two value
x=24y and x=24y
Now slope of AP and AB are equal
y302=y00x
2y+3x=xy
putting both value of xy
2y+72y=24
and
2y72y=24
Hence both are quardratic eq SO possible solution is 4
