Question

The principle source of oxygen in industry today is:
  1. thermal dissociation of dinitrogen tetraoxide
  2. electrolysis of nitric acid
  3. reduction of nitrous oxide
  4. fractional distillation of liquid air

A
fractional distillation of liquid air
B
thermal dissociation of dinitrogen tetraoxide
C
electrolysis of nitric acid
D
reduction of nitrous oxide
Solution
Verified by Toppr

The principle source of oxygen in industry today is fractional distillation of liquid air. In this commercial method, air is liquefied by using Joule-Thomson effect. Water vapour and carbon dioxide are removed by solidification. Liquid oxygen ( boiling point 183 oC) is separated from liquid nitrogen ( boiling point 195.8 oC) by fractional distillation.
