Question

The radius of earth is about 6400 km and that of Mars is 3200 km. The mass of the earth is about 10 times the mass of Mars. An object weighs 200 N on the surface of Earth. Its weight on the surface of mars will be:

  1. 20 N
  2. 8 N
  3. 80 N
  4. 40 N

A
80 N
B
20 N
C
8 N
D
40 N
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Radius of earth Re=6400 and that of Mars is Rm=3200 so Re=2Rm
And if mass of earth be Me and that of Mars is Mm then Me=10Mm

Value of g on mars gm=GMmR2m
and that on earth is ge=GMeR2e=G×10Mm4×R2m=2.5GMmR2m or gm=ge/2.5

Weight on earth is 200N so mass 200/ge
Now weight on Mars will be mass×gm=(200/ge)×gm=200×gmge=200/2.5=80N
Option C is correct.
