Question

The ratio in which the line joining of (-2,5) and (1,-9) is divided by the x-axis is
  1. 5:9
  2. 2:1
  3. 4:5
  4. 4:9

A
2:1
B
4:9
C
4:5
D
5:9
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Using the section formula, if a point (x,y) divides the line joining the points (x1,y1) and (x2,y2) in the ratio m:n, then

(x,y)=(mx2+nx1m+n,my2+ny1m+n)

Let the ratio AP:PB be k:1
Therefore, y-coordinate of P=(k)(9)+(1)(5)k+1
or -9k + 5 = 0
or k=59
Ratio = 5:9
