Question

The ratio of pH of a solution containing 1 mole of CH3COONa+1 mole of HCl per litre and of other solution containing 1 mole of CH3COONa+1 mole of acetic acid per litre is:
  1. pH1:pH2::2:5
  2. pH1:pH2::2:3
  3. pH1:pH2::1:2
  4. none of these

A
pH1:pH2::1:2
B
none of these
C
pH1:pH2::2:5
D
pH1:pH2::2:3
Solution
Verified by Toppr

CH3COONa+HClCH3COOH+NaCl
[CH3COOH]=[CH3COONa]=1 mol/L
pH for weak acid =logKaC=12[pKa+logC]=12[pKa+log1]=pKa2(1)
1 mole of CH3COONa+1 mole of acetic acid for a buffer solution.
pH of this buffer =pKa+log[CH3COONa][CH3COOH]=pKa+log1=pKa(2)
Required ratio =pHin(1)pHin(2)=pKa/2pKa=12
