Question

The refractive indices of the crown glass for blue and red light are 1.51 and 1.49 respectively and those of the flint glass are 1.77 and 1.73 respectively. An isosceles prism of angle 6o is made of crown glass. A beam of white light is incident at a small angle on this prism. The other flint glass isosceles prism is combined with the crown glass prism such that there is no deviation of the incident light.The angle of the flint glass prism is
  1. 4
  2. 2
  3. 8
  4. 6

A
2
B
8
C
6
D
4
Solution
Verified by Toppr

We have
(μ11)A1+(μ21)A2=0

A2A1=μ11μ21
Where for crown, μ1=(μR+μB2=(1.51+1.492)=1.5

and for flint μ2=(μR+μB2=(1.77+1.732)=1.75

A2A1=1.511.751=0.667
A2=0.667×6=40

A crown glass prism of angle 5 is to be combined with a flint glass prism in such a way that the mean ray passes undeviated. The angle of flint glass prism is A and angular deviation produced by the combination when white light goes through it is δ. Refractive indices for red, yellow and violet light are 1.514, 1.517 and 1.523 respectively for crown glass and 1.613, 1.620 and 1.632 for flint glass. Then :
