Solution
Verified by Toppr

DNA synthesis and replication occurs during interphase. The replicated chromosomes (DNA) are then distributed to daughter nuclei by a complex series of events during cell division. These events occur during the M phase and are themselves under genetic control. This process can be divided into four distinct phases:
  • Prophase: During this phase the chromosomes become untangled and condense to form the mitotic chromosomes. The centrioles move towards the opposite poles.
  • Metaphase: The nuclear envelope disintegrates completely. The chromosomes get arranged into the sister chromatids and become arranged at the centre of the nucleus, forming the metaphase plate.
  • Anaphase: During this stage, the centromeres of the chromosomes split and the sister chromatids move towards the opposite poles.
  • Telophase: The chromosomes cluster at the opposite spindle poles and the nucleolus and the cell organelles reappear.
