Akbar introduced the Mansabdari system. Mansabdars were made responsible to maintain a specified number of "Sawar" or "Cavalrymen". Mansabdar provided troops to the king at the time of war. Before this Mansabdar brought their cavalrymen for registration and made their horses branded.
