  1. A touches the positive plate and remains in contact with it.
  2. A touches positive plate and then moves towards negative plate and remains in contact with it.
  3. A moves to and fro between the two plates with a constant time period.
  4. A moves to and fro between the two plates with an increasing time period.

A
A moves to and fro between the two plates with a constant time period.
B
A moves to and fro between the two plates with an increasing time period.
C
A touches positive plate and then moves towards negative plate and remains in contact with it.
D
A touches the positive plate and remains in contact with it.

The two charged plates create a region with a uniform electric field. the field is directed from positive to negative plates.
Once a sphere is disturbed to suppose it touches +ve plate and some +ve charged is transferred to the ball, an electric force will be acting on the sphere and accelerates towards -ve plate. Once it touches -ve plate the +ve charge disappears and -ve charged is transferred on the sphere.
Therefore, the sphere will continue this to and fro motion between the two plates until the charge becomes net charge transferred that is the plates become neutrally charged.
option D is the correct answer.

Q2
A metalic sphere is suspended between 2 plates A and B.
The plate A is negatively charged while plate B is neutral and earthed.
The spehere is seen oscillating towards the plate A touches it and then it moves to plate B.
It again swings from plate B to plate A continuously.
1) Why does the sphere move towards plate A first?
2) Why does it oscillate towards B?
3) Why does the sphere keep moving continuously?

Two vertical metallic plates carrying equal and opposite charges are kept parallel to each other like a parallel plate capacitor. A small spherical metallic ball is suspended by a long insulated thread such that it hangs freely in the center of the two metallic plates. The ball, which is uncharged, is taken slowly towards the positively charged plate and is made to touch that plate. Then the ball will :
