Question

The velocity of the wave
  1. 80 cm/sec
  2. 112 cm/sec
  3. 120 cm/sec
  4. 140 cm/sec

A
80 cm/sec
B
112 cm/sec
C
140 cm/sec
D
120 cm/sec
Solution

The time period T is the time per wave. So for 20 waves the time period will be 4/20=0.2.
Thus, frequency, f=1/T=1/0.2=5 Hz
Now the distance between a crest and a trough is equal to half of the wavelength (λ).
So, 12=λ/2 or λ=24 cm
Thus, the velocity of wave v=fλ=5(24)=120cm/s
