Question

Three capacitors each of capacitance 9 pF are connected in series as shown in figure.
(a) What is the total capacitance of the combination?
(b) What is the potential difference across each capacitor, if the combination is connected to a 120 volt supply?

Solution
Verified by Toppr

(A) Effective capacitance in series combination is given by:
1Cs=1C1+1C2+1C3
1Cs=19+19+19
Cs=03pF
so, total capacitance of the combination is 3pF

(B) Q=CsV
Q=3×120=360pC
V1=QC1 (as in series combination, charges is constant)
3609=40V
V2=QC2=3609=40V
V3=QC3=3609=40V
