Question

To a germanium sample, traces of gallium are added as an impurity. The resultant sample would behave like
  1. a conductor
  2. an n-type semiconductor
  3. a insulator
  4. a p-type semiconductor

A
a p-type semiconductor
B
an n-type semiconductor
C
a conductor
D
a insulator
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Gallium is a trivalent atom. When it is added to the germanium, extra hole is created in lattice by each gallium atom. Hole is assumed to have a positive charge on it, hence germanium will behave like a p-type semiconductor.

The conductivity of intrinsic semiconductors can be increased by adding a suitable impurity. This process is called ______(P). This can be done with an impurity which is ______(O) rich or deficient as compared to the semiconductor. Such impurities introduce ______(R) defects in them. Electron rich impurities result in ______(S) type semiconductors while electrons deficit impurities result in______(T) type semiconductors.
