Question

To make tea, a tourist puts into a kettle 2 kg of ice at a temperature of 0oC. How much heat would be needed if the tourist had taken 2 kg of water from an ice hole, instead of ice at 0oC?

Solution
Verified by Toppr

Mass of Water = 2000g
If he had water,
Required heat = msΔT =2000×1×(1000)=200000calories

If he had ice,
Required Heat = Heat to melt Ice(mL) + Heat to raise temperature from 0oC to 100oC (msΔT)

Required heat =(2000×80)+(2000×1×(1000))=160000+200000=360000calories
