Question

To what depth must a rubber ball be taken in deep sea so that its volume is decreased by 0.1%
(Take density of sea water 103kgm3, bulk modulus of rubber =9×108Nm2,g=10ms2)
  1. 18m
  2. 90m
  3. 180m
  4. 9m

A
180m
B
9m
C
18m
D
90m
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Let h be the depth at which the rubber ball be taken, Then
P=hρg...(i)
By definition of bulk modulus
B=PΔV/V
The negative sign shows that with increase in pressure, a decrease in volume occurs.
P=BΔVV
Using (i)
hρg=BΔVVorh=BρgΔVV
Substituting the given values, we get
h=(9×108Nm2103kgm3×10ms2)(0.1100)=90m
