Question

Two containers, X and Y at 300K and 350K with water vapour pressures 22 mm and 40 mm respectively a are connected, initially closed with a valve. If the valves opened.
  1. The final pressure in each container is 31 mm
  2. The final pressure in each container is 40 mm
  3. Mass of H2O(l) in X increases
  4. Mass of H2O(l) in Y decreases roar.

A
The final pressure in each container is 40 mm
B
The final pressure in each container is 31 mm
C
Mass of H2O(l) in X increases
D
Mass of H2O(l) in Y decreases roar.
Solution
Verified by Toppr

- The vapour pressur in the cointainer y is higher than the vapour pressure in the container x . - When the value is opened, the vapour from container y diffuse in the container x and condense there. - When the equilibrium is re-established, the mass of liquid water in the contaier y decreases and container x increases. Hence the answer is, option ( A ) i.e. The final pressure in each container is 31 mm .

The volume of containers A and B, connected by a tube and a closed valve are V and 4V respectively. Both the containers A and B have the same ideal gas, at pressures 5.0×105 Pa and 1.0×105 Pa and temperatures 300 K and 400 K respectively. The valve is opened to allow the pressure to equalise, but the temperature of each container is kept constant at its initial value. Find the common pressure in the containers.
