Question

Two long thin wires ABC and DEF are arranged as shown in figure. They carry equal current I as shown. The magnitude of the magnetic field at O is

  1. zero
  2. μ0I/4πa
  3. μ0I/2πa
  4. μ0I/22πa

A
μ0I/22πa
B
zero
C
μ0I/2πa
D
μ0I/4πa
Solution
Verified by Toppr

AB and DE do not give any magnetic field at O.
Magnetic field at a distance d due to semi infinite wire is B=μ0I4πd
Magnetic field at O due to BC is BBC=μ0I4πa (out of plane of paper)
Magnetic field at O due to EF is
BEF=μ0I4πa (out of plane of paper)
So the final B is the sum of the BC and EF.
So, Btotal=BBC+BEF=μ0I2πa

As shown in the figure, a single conducting wire is bent to form a loop in the form of a circle of radius 'r' concentrically inside a square of side 'a', where a: r = 8 : π. A battery B drives a current through the wire. If the battery B and the gap G are of negligible sizes, determine the strength of magnetic field at the common centre O.
