Question

Two points sources S1 and S2 are 24 cm apart. Where should a convex lens of focal length 9 cm be placed in between them so that the images of both sources are formed at the same place?
  1. 6cm from S1
  2. 15cm from S1
  3. 10cm from S1
  4. 12cm from S1

A
6cm from S1
B
15cm from S1
C
10cm from S1
D
12cm from S1
Solution

In this case, one of the image will be real and the other virtual. Let us assume that image of S1 is real and that of S2 is virtual.
Applying 1v1u=1f
For S1:1y+1x=19....(i)
For S2:1y+124x=19....(ii)
Solving Eqs. (i) and (ii), we get
x=6 cm.

Three sources of sound S1,S2 and S3 of equal intensity are placed in a straight line with S1,S2=S2,S3 (figure 16-E5). At a point P, far away from the sources, the wave coming from S2 is 120 ahead in phase of that from S1 Also, the wave coming from S3 is 120 ahead of that from S2. What would be the resultant intensity of sound at P?
