STEP 2: The coefficient of the linear expansion of second rod of length I2 is:

ΔI2=α2I2Δt.......(2)
STEP 3: Now, if a single rod of linear expansion αis taken instead of two rods.
α=ΔI1+ΔI2(I1+I2)×Δt......(3)
STEP 4: Putting the values of ΔI1andΔI2in equation 3, we get;
α=α1I1Δt+α2I2Δt(I1+I2)Δt
α=I1α1+I2α2I1+I2
