Question

Reason
It will then into a different orbit.
Assertion
Two satellites A and B are in the same orbit around the earth, B being behind A. B cannot overtake A by increasing its speed.

A
Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
B
Both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not the correct explanation for Assertion
C
Both Assertion and Reason are incorrect
D
Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Correct option is A. Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
We know that,
Orbital speed = $$v_o \, \alpha \, \sqrt{\dfrac{GM}{R}}$$
Since, $$v_o$$ is inversely proportional to $$R$$ , hence when B increases its speed it will go into different orbit.

The energy of the earth-satellite system in a circular orbit is given by $$E = ( -GMm) / (2r) $$, where r is the radius of the circular orbit.
Assertion
Two satellites are following one another in the same circular orbit. If one satellite tries to catch another (leading one) satellite, then it can be done by increasing its speed without changing the orbit.

Assertion :Two satellites are following one another in the same circular orbit. If one satellite tries to catch another(leading one) satellite, then it can be done by increasing its speed without changing the orbit. Reason: The energy of earth-satellite system in circular orbit is given by E=(Gms)/(2a), where r is the radius of the circular orbit.
