Question

Two similar very small conducting spheres having charges 40C and 20C are at some distance apart. Now they are touched and then kept at a same initial distance. The ratio of the initial to the final force between them is:
  1. 8:1
  2. 4:1
  3. 1:8
  4. 1:1

A
1:1
B
8:1
C
4:1
D
1:8
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Initially force between conducting spheres F1=Kq1q2r2=K(40)(20)r2(i)
After contact total charge=4020=20μC
Now charge will be equally distributed
so q1=q2=202=10μC
Finally force between spheresF2=K(10)(10)r2(ii)
Ratio of forces=F1F2=40×2010×10=8

Two small conducting spheres of equal radius have charges +10μC and 20μC respectively and placed at a distance R from each other experience force F1. If they are brought in contact and separated to the same distance, they experience force F2. The ratio of F1 to F2 is

The force of repulsion between two point charges is F, when these are at a distance of 1 m apart. Now they are replaced by conducting spheres each of radii 25 cm having the same charge as that of point charges. The distance between their centres is 1 m, then compare the force of repulsion in the two cases.
