Question

Two stars of mass M each, move in circular orbits about their center of mass C.The distance between them is 2R. A very small body A of mass m(m<<M) also rotates about the point C, such that its relative position with respect to the stars remains constant.If the distance between a star and the small mass A is nR, find the value of n.

Solution
Verified by Toppr

Since it lies in between the two stars M and M then only it can be equidistant and it is at a distance R from each star.
n=1

Two small dense stars rotate about their common centre of mass as a binary system with the period 1 year for each. One star is of double the mass of the other and the mass of the lighter one is 1/3 of the mass of the sun. The distance between the stars is xR if distance between the earth & the sun is R, find x.

The distance between two stars of masses 3MS and 6MS is 9R. Here R is the mean distance between the centers of the Earth and the Sun, and MS is the mass of the Sun. The two stars orbit around their common center of mass in circular orbits with period nT, where T is the period of Earth’s revolution around the Sun. The value of n is
